How to make Open/Shut Them nursery rhymes for toddlers more engaging (is that even possible?) Debbie Doo

Hi everyone and welcome to terrific totts. So, as you may already know, or don’t… I really like nursery rhymes and I think they are an awesome tool and resource that you can use to help your child develop some serious skills that will enhance their learning on so many levels.

“Fun and just a little bit important fact: Most development happens before the age of 3 across the whole human life span.”

That’s right! Your toddlers’ brain is on fire, searching for knowledge and understanding like a research scientist on the verge of making a huge discovery! Their brains are so eager to develop, explore and to gain skills that pretty much everything they do is almost in involuntary push by their neurological impulses. Why do you think children just have to walk across raised ledges, or logs when they see them? We plead with them to get down, be careful, but there is something much deeper at work. So although it’s wise to keep an eye out, it’s their brains that are forcing them to act so they can learn how to balance, cause let’s face it, balance is kind of necessary!

So, what does involuntary acts of random spontaneity, (phew, that’s a sentence and a half) have to do with the nursery rhyme Open/Shut them? Well, glad you asked. This rhyme is all about fine motor movement with that element of surprise, anticipation and fun that toddlers love.

This post does have a twist. When I used to perform this for my kids, they really loved it, but I discovered something that made the experience even better.  When I performed it with a cute hand puppet, they loved it even more.😄

“Puppets can help portray a wide range of emotions that helps children make sense of the world.” Debbie Doo

Puppets stimulate our kid’s creativity and imagination. They are a great tool in terms of role playing that aids in a child’s emotional development. For this rhyme, put two cute hand puppets on to perform the actions followed by a tickle under the chin. This will unleash some serious giggles, and who doesn’t like toddler giggles? You’ll also be helping your child strengthen their fine motor movement in their hands, later contributing to a firmer pen grip and more ease tieing laces. So what are you waiting for? Find some cute hand puppets, you could even decorate some socks, and get singing, clapping and giggling! You child will thank you for it.❤

Below are the lyrics and my YouTube video of the popular nursery rhyme. So have fun! And don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube Channel Debbie Doo Kids TV and stream and follow on Spotify. I hope my resources can be one of the many tools you use to make the formative years with your child or student, educational, engaging and fun!

Open Shut Them

Verse 1
Open shut them, open shut them give a little clap,
Open shut them, open shut them, lay them in your lap.
Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them,
right up to your chin.
Open wide your little mouth, but do not let them in!

Verse 2
Wiggle them, wiggle them, wiggle them, wiggle them,
give a little clap.
Wiggle them, wiggle them, wiggle them, wiggle them,
lay them in your lap.
Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them,
right up to your chin.
Open wide your little mouth, but do not let them in!

Verse 3
Open shut them, open shut them give a little clap,
Open shut them, open shut them, lay them in your lap.
Creep them, creep them, creep them, creep them,
right up to your chin.
Open wide your little mouth, but do not let them in!

Stay tuned for my next blog post and I’ll see you all again soon. Bye for now. Debbie Doo⭐

Change it up a bit and put a pair of cute hand puppets on
