The Incredible Value of Friendship Debbie Doo

A month ago, I lost my childhood friend to cancer. One minute I was smiling at her family videos on social media, the next I was reading her eulogy. I still have her letters. They are filled with child like fun and mischief. Memories swish in my mind as if they were created yesterday. Balancing on logs at lunchtime. Singing Sufin’ Safari by the Beachboys. Chatting during sleepovers until our eyes drooped with tiredness. She used to tell me that one day I would make people happy with my music. I hope I made her proud… RIP my dear friend and may your soul rest upon the wings of the angels forever. 🤍

Phycologists know that friends are incredibly important for our mental health and our quality of life. True friendship gives us an invaluable opportunity to love and to learn about ourselves and about eachother in a safe and non competitive way.

True friendship allows us to experience life in it’s rawest form. It keeps us company and tests our vulnerabilities as it is often friends who we confine in when faced with life’s unexpected challenges and events.

Our friendships give us courage to risk our emotional intimacy. We open our hearts to our friends, where the true ones take permanent residency.

To seek true friendship, we must be ready to invest time, effort and honesty. We must be willing to let go of superficiality and a keeping up with the Jones mentality. We need to revel in good news, a new house, job promotion, and never harbour jealousy, competition or resentment.

We must be proud of our friends and in return our friends must be proud of us.

So call that friend who you haven’t spoken too in a while. Tell them how much you love and value them. Support, encourage and compliment them with sincerity, because as I have just discovered, we never truly know what’s around life’s corner.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.♥ It was hard to write, but that is the beauty of words. They can help to heal a broken heart.

Below is a song I wrote about friendship. Please use it as a resource to teach your own children the immense value and power of friendship and how following the basic human principles of trust, mutual respect and loyalty will establish bonds and priceless memories that have the potential to last a lifetime.

As the song says… I get by with a little help from my friends. I don’t know where I’d be without mine… ❤

The Friendship Song
Written by Debbie Doo
Verse 1
I am so glad that you now know my name,
I feel so good with you, I hope that you feel the same.
You’re my best friend.
Verse 2
I know at times we don’t see eye to eye,
We are different, both you and I.
But together, you and me,
We’re happy.
Pre Chorus
12345 here’s how to keep a friendship alive,
trust, respect and honesty, it’s all the three.
Chorus
So jump up, if you’re my friend,
like a circle that has no end.
Jump up, let me hear you shout,
trust, respect and honesty.
Is what friendships about.
Verse 3
I won’t be mean, I won’t talk about you,
I will encourage, support what you do.
I’ll care, and I’ll be there.
Pre Chorus
12345 here’s how to keep a friendship alive.
Loyality and love, it’s all the above.
Chorus
So jump up, if you’re my friend,
like a circle that has no end.
Jump up, let me hear you shout
Loyality and love.
Chorus
So jump up if you’re my friend
like a circle that has no end.
Jump up, let me hear you shout,
all the above is what friendships about.

All your sentiments in your post regarding the passing of your friend resonate with me. I especially liked your advice that friendship requires commitment to communicate from both sides. To often as a result of moving from state to state with jobs has led to me not keeping in touch. Over the covid19 lockdown I have learnt to, just put aside the time to give a friend a call. Now I must continue to do that and just ask, “How are you?”.
    Thanks Debbie

I agree! A commitment on both sides. Yes, Covid has made us take a look at life in a different way. Family, friends and community is priceless. 🙂

Your post resonated with me. True friendships are worth their weight in gold. This year I came to the conclusion that I would focus on my true friendships and let go of superficial, critical and non-inclusive friends . Those types of people can do real damage. The friends I appreciate are fun to be around and make me feel accepted. Thank you for your heartfelt post and RiP to your dear friend.

I agree, they are priceless. In the longest study on happiness where they followed participants from the age of 19 to old age, the one thing that resonated for a happy life was relationships. More than status, wealth or prestige. Thanks for taking the time to comment! 🙂
